Lifetime total and beverage specific - alcohol intake and prostate cancer risk: a case-control study

2004

Abstract Background We investigated lifetime alcohol consumption and prostate cancer risk in a case-control study conducted in Buffalo, NY (1998–2001). Methods The study included 88 men, aged 45 to 85 years with incident, histologically-confirmed prostate cancer and 272 controls. We conducted extensive in-person interviews regarding lifetime alcohol consumption and other epidemiologic data. Results Prostate cancer risk was not associated with lifetime intake of total and beverage specific ethanol. In addition we found no association with number of drinks per day (average drinks per day over the lifetime) or drinks per drinking day (average drinks per day on drinking days only over the lifet…

The serum protease network—one key to understand complex regional pain syndrome pathophysiology

2019

Complex regional pain syndrome (CRPS) develops after fracture. The acute CRPS phenotype resembles exaggerated inflammation, which is explained by local and systemic activation of a proinflammatory network including peptides and cytokines. Epidemiologic data suggest that inactivation of the peptidase angiotensin-converting enzyme in patients treated for hypertension increases the odds to develop CRPS. This hint leads us to investigate the serum protease network activity in patients with CRPS vs respective controls. For this purpose, we developed a dabsyl-bradykinin (DBK)-based assay and used it to investigate patients with CRPS, as well as healthy and pain (painful diabetic neuropathy [dPNP]…

2015

Objectives: Non-Hodgkin lymphomas are malignant neoplastic proliferations of the immune system that can manifest as nodal or extranodal lymphomas. The aim of this study was to retrospectively investigate the site of occurrence of lymphomas in the head and neck area and to analyze the typical symptoms of patients who presented at an oral and maxillofacial surgical department. Material and Methods: All patient files from1971 until 2012 from an Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery of a University were analyzed for the diagnosis non-Hodgkin lymphoma. Epidemiologic data and data regarding the localization of the malignant lymphoma were evaluated. Results: 62 patients, 34 women and 28 men with a non-Ho…

Pediatric Germ Cell Tumors From 1987 to 2011: Incidence Rates, Time Trends, and Survival

2014

BACKGROUND: Malignant germ cell tumors (GCTs) are a rare and a heterogeneous group of pediatric cancers. The incidence rate has increased in some populations or subgroups. However, only a few recent publications on epidemiologic data showing the trends in incidence of pediatric GCTs are available. METHODS: We analyzed the incidence rates, time trends, and survival for 1366 GCTs in children 0 to 14 years old registered in the nationwide, population-based German Childhood Cancer Registry in 1987–2011. RESULTS: The incidence rate of GCTs was slightly higher in girls (age-standardized rate: girls, 5.3; boys, 4.4 per million). A bimodal age distribution was seen. In children aged <1 year…

Population-based case-control study of essential tremor.

1998

Current epidemiologic data on the association between environmental factors and essential tremor (ET) are scanty. In a population-based case-control study we investigated the relationship between some putative risk factors and ET. In the present study, we included all subjects identified during a door-to-door prevalence survey in a Sicilian community, affected by ET, and alive on 1 November 1987 (n=31). Of the 31 prevalent cases of ET, we were able to contact 28 subjects. Twenty-eight controls were randomly selected from the general population and matched to each case for age and sex. Exposure variables were investigated by interviewing the patients and their controls or close relatives, us…
